Many of the food supplement manufacturers offer vitamins and minerals as part of their product range. The dilemma of choosing the product that suits us best is strong, because there are thousands of supplements, offering us “the best”.

All these years in the supplement industry we have received many questions regarding the quality of the vitamin blends. In this topic we will try to give you directions, so you can choose the best combined multivitamin and minerals supplements!

Our Pay Attention Guide:

Vitamin B12 – It’s most frequent form is Cyanocobalamin or Methylcobalamin. The first is made in the lab, but the second one is given by the nature. Methylcobalamin is premethylated which means that is ready-to-digest by the human body.

Hint: Choose the formulas with  Methylcobalamin (B12)

Vitamin E –
stay away from the DL forms. They are sign of synthetic form of the vitamin. If the manufacturers points out a form, look up for mixed tocopherols or D-alpha tocopherol.

Hint: Choose the formulas with mixed tocopherols or D-alpha tocopherol.

Vitamin D – there are rare case of vitamin D2 using, but you must be sure. Check for the active ingredient, it must be Cholecalciferol (D3)

Hint:
Do not take products with vitamin D2!

Vitamin B5 – Gone missing in many formulas. The quality formula will include vitamin B5!

Hint: Choose supplements with vitamin B5

Vitamin A – often there is a combination between Beta-carotene and Palmitate. The best choice includes a supplement with Beta-carotene only.

Hint: Choose product with Beta-carotene

Vitamin C and the other B-complex Vitamins have good level of digestion.

You must also pay attention for the minerals. If the mineral form is attached to an amino acid everything is OK.

Magnesium – Magnesium is the most common mineral that is found in poorly digestible forms. Be aware of magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate, because their absorption varies from 0% to 4%. The forms you must seek are Magnesium gluconate, magnesium citrate or magnesium bisglycinate.

Hint: Avoid magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate. Search for Magnesium gluconate, magnesium citrate or magnesium bisglycinate.

ZincZinc is no exception and everything mentioned for the magnesium fully applies here. The most preferable forms are Zinc aspartate, because it is chelated with amino acids.

Hint: Look for Zinc aspartate.

If you wonder why the manufacturers use low digestible forms of the ingredients, we will enlighten you. The answer is pretty simple: the synthetic vitamins and non chelated minerals are way cheaper, which means more profit for the company.
