What is iodine?

Also called iodide, iodine is a type of mineral that is found naturally in the earth's soil and ocean waters. Many saltwater and plant foods contain iodine, and the most widely available is iodized salt.

It is extremely important to get enough iodine through food, but if we fail, supplements come to the rescue. Iodine is an important mineral because it regulates hormones, fetal development, and other processes in the body.

If iodine levels are low, your doctor may recommend supplements. It is extremely important that you do NOT take any potassium iodide supplements without first consulting your doctor.

Radiation exposure protection

In the event of a radiation leak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the use of potassium iodide (KI) to protect the thyroid gland from radiation injury. They are available in the form of tablets and liquid formulas.

Although it is not entirely certain, the sooner potassium iodide is taken, the better it is thought that the thyroid gland is protected in the event of such an emergency.

Supports thyroid health

Iodine plays a vital role in thyroid health. It is located at the base of the front of your neck and helps regulate hormone production. These hormones control metabolism, heart health, and several other processes.

To produce thyroid hormones, it absorbs iodine in small amounts. Without it, the production of thyroid hormones can be reduced. A "low" or underactive thyroid can lead to a condition called hypothyroidism.

While iodine promotes overall thyroid health, too much iodine can harm the thyroid gland. Therefore, you should NOT take iodine supplements without a doctor's recommendation!

Water disinfection

Iodine is one of the methods for disinfecting water. It can be especially useful if you do not have access to drinking water due to the effects of a natural disaster.

Two percent liquid iodine tincture can be added to the water in steps of five drops per liter of pure water. If the water is cloudy, add ten drops per liter.

Iodine tablets may also be used, but instructions may vary depending on the manufacturer.
Despite the role that iodine may play in the disinfection of drinking water, there are some concerns that it may increase the overall intake of iodine in humans and lead to adverse health effects. The total iodine intake should not exceed 2 mg per day.
